Cutting Myself Some Slack

Posted: November 26, 2013 in Uncategorized

What a day.

Yesterday was decent, work, solid shoulder workout and bed early with the intentions of an early run. The alarm went off and thankfully I was good and got my lazy butt out of bed. It’s only 30 minute runs this week so all in all I have no reason to slack off.

Sadly my old pre-morning cardio supplements left me feeling really hot and wonky so it wasn’t fantastic, but it got done.

Cue a messy snow/freezing rainy day, a longgggg day at work and just general blahs I didn’t feel like a workout tonight. At all. Knowing I had a ton of stuff to do at home didn’t help, so instead of the gym I went right home and got to work in the kitchen.

Paleo chili loosely based on this recipe . I’m not a fan of labelling food habits, so no, I’m not “paleo”. However, I don’t like beans so paleo style chili is my deal. No bacon (… I’m cheap, it wasn’t on sale) and adjusting amounts based on what I had on hand made for a delicious meal.

Just because I “allowed” myself to take the night off doesn’t mean I’m allowing myself to restrict calories like I sometimes feel like I should. No workout? Less food! …. No.

It’s a day by day process to figure out and adjust to what I like best. This is the first time I’ve worked 8:30-5 without being in prep and honestly, not a fan of the gym at night. I might just get up a little earlier and run/lift all at once. I’m a morning person and think I should stop fighting that.

But until I work out a routine I’m choosing to cut myself some slack. Give myself the time to adapt and adjust. There’s no big huge looming goal on the near horizon, so I’ve got all the time in the world to figure this stuff out. It’s time to lose the all or nothing approach, get back to basics and make the small changes stick into and even bigger picture.

I think it’s great that you’re taking your time adjusting and just figuring things out. It’s easy to fall into all or nothing mind sets, and giving yourself some slack is great–you should feel proud!

  2. I can relate to this so much. I don’t even know why I’ve been stressing myself out trying to get runs in because like you I have nothing looming. I need to take this advice.
